Do the military cover divorce spouses

Frequently Asked Questions Find answers to your TRICARE questions.

I’m getting divorced, what happens to my TRICARE eligibility?

Your eligibility ends at 11:59:59 PM on the date of divorce, unless you meet certain criteria. You need to report the divorce to DMDC/DEERS Support Office as soon as possible after the divorce. If you don't report it and continue to get care, TRICARE will recoup on all claims paid when you showed as ineligible (usually back to the date of the divorce). To learn more, visit the Getting Divorced page. A stepchild not adopted by the sponsor, loses eligibility at the same time as the spouse.

If you have questions about your eligibility, call the DMDC/DEERS Support Office.

Note: Getting divorced is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). The sponsor and eligible children have 90 days from the date of divorce to make changes to their TRICARE health plan. Visit the QLE page to learn more. Getting separated from your spouse isn’t a QLE.
