I have found that using Open Office in resume preparation is as easy as Office (maybe easier), but when I use Open Office to send a resume it fails. Is there a way to convert ODT to .doc or .docx to use in job searches? Thank y'all.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Save as.
Note that .docx is not supported in AOO. LibreOffice can do some .docx export. But beware this is not a format designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office.
If you use AOO, then stick to its native format .odt (for text).
Else, export in .pdf.
Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

File > Save As and pick the format you want.
Note that translations are good but not always perfect. It is a good idea to check the layout in Word or Word viewer before sending it.
It is much better to send a pdf which will be formatted as you intend. File > pdf > etc.

You don't want the receipient to edit your resume.
You want the receipient to read and print out your resume.
This is what the PDF format is made for. It is an exact virtual print out of what you created with some other software (OpenOffice in this case).
Contrary to MS Office, PDF readers are freely availlable for all platforms.
Many PDF readers allow for adding annotations to the document (similar to sticky notes).
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

I am not sure but I suspect that some employers have bought cheap résumé scanning software that only will work with Word and so demand a Word file. I remember seeing a quote to the effect of "I don't think I'd want to work for any employer who asked for a résumé in Word".
